Finding a reliable and qualified babysitter can indeed be a challenge, but it is possible! Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer about how to find a reliable-qualified babysitter in Champaign County. As the admin of the CU Childcare Connection Facebook group and owner of Nannyville Nanny Agency, I am committed to providing high quality nanny and babysitting services to support Champaign-Urbana families.

We surveyed 133 parents and 33 sitters located in Champaign County about all things sitter. Our goal was to get a better understanding about what challenges sitters and families may be facing in anticipation for our comprehensive babysitting app. Illini Sitters is a platform where you can find and book qualified sitters with a click of a button. Yes, like Uber – but for babysitters! Beyond our pilot launch in March here is what we have to share!

How much are families willing to pay a qualified babysitter?

When deciding how much to pay a babysitter some factors to consider include the age of the children, the number of hours you’ll need the babysitter, the location, the babysitter’s experience, and the responsibilities of the position. Based on both the family and sitter survey, generally, the going rate for babysitting services in Champaign County is around $15-$20 per hour.

When do families generally need a sitter?

Families typically need a babysitter when they have to be away from home for an extended period of time, such as for work or travel. Babysitters can help when parents need to attend an event or take a night out for themselves. They can also help when parents need an extra hand during a particularly busy period or when an emergency arises and they need someone to watch their children. According to the survey, most families need a babysitter for date nights.

How often do families need a babysitter

According to the survey, families typically need a babysitter 1-2 times per month. In turn, sitters are looking to babysit far more than one families demand. Mathematically, that should work perfectly but famillies and sitters find it challenging to connect when a family needs a sitter versus the sitters availability. It can be challenging to find one reliable babysitter to be available each time a family needs a sitter because babysitters typically have other full time commitments and babysit for supplemental income.

How successful are families at finding babysitters on your own?

To our surprise, over 80% of families struggle with finding a babysitter when they need one. You are certainly not alone in the struggle to find a reliable babysitter. It takes time finding people you can trust, but it can be done. If you are looking for a babysitter consider asking your friends and family for referrals and look into online resources that can help you find reliable sitters in your area. You can also look into local organizations such as churches or youth groups that may be able to connect you with potential sitters. It’s important to take the time to conduct thorough background checks and interviews with potential babysitters to ensure they are a good fit. If you don’t have the time, resources, or hiring expertise to find a babysitter or a nanny that can ensure your children’s safety consider using an agency or babysitting service.
